The All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) for the year 2020-2021, which was recently released by the Ministry of Education, collected comprehensive data on all institutions of higher learning across India. The extensive survey gathered pertinent information regarding student enrollment figures, teacher statistics, infrastructure specifications, and financial particulars for each institute. In a pioneering move, educational facilities utilized an innovative online platform through the Web Data Capture Format devised by the Department of Higher Education in association with the National Informatics Centre to directly submit their statistics digitally for the very first time.

Enrollment statistics in post-secondary schooling saw a substantial surge, with the total number of registrations increasing to approximately 4.14 crore in 2020-2021 compared to 3.85 crore in the previous year. This demonstrates that enrollment eclipsed the landmark of 4 crore and represents a swelling of 7.5% from 2019-2020 and a sizable 21% expansion from 2014-2015. Female participation also witnessed a notable leap, achieving the 2 crore threshold after an addition of 13 lakh since 2019-2020. Consequently, the percentage of women enrolled compared to total enrollment increased from 45% in 2014-2015 to approximately 49% in 2020-2021.

Moreover, the survey highlights considerable growth in participation from marginalized groups. Scheduled Caste student enrollment observed a significant rise of 28% in 2020-2021 relative to 2014-2015. Enrollment of female Scheduled Caste students escalated an impressive 38%. Scheduled Tribe student registrations surged a formidable 47% and female Scheduled Tribe student numbers ballooned a mammoth 63.4% between the same time frames. Other Backward Caste enrollment also rose by 6 lakh to 1.48 crore in 2020-2021, up from 1.42 crore in the previous year – representing an increase of around 36 lakh or 32% since 2014-2015.

Furthermore, the findings reveal that the Gross Enrollment Ratio has grown for all social classes more so than before, and registration in Distance Learning increased 7% in 2020-21 from the year prior. Seventy new universities were established, and 1,453 additional colleges opened their doors in 2020-21 compared to 2019-20. The Gender Parity Index has also risen from 1 in 2017-18 to 1.05 in 2020-21, indicating that female GER has now surpassed male GER since 2017-18.

India’s higher education marketplace is anticipated to display a 9.9% average annual growth during the projected period of 2023 to 2028. Several factors are fueling the market, including better literacy and more students enrolling, stemming from the need for graduates with higher degrees to adapt to rapid changes in business. Greater digitalization penetrating the education sector combined with individuals having more money to spend on learning is positively impacting demand for higher education. Globalization spreading and many Indian universities thoroughly adopting international and intercultural aspects are further spurring need for higher education. Implementing supportive government policies aim to encourage higher education in India which drives development. Technology’s rising integration is expected to strengthen India’s higher learning systems in coming years as well.

IMARC Group examines reports on India’s higher education market, splitting the marketplace based on type, affiliation, courses provided, education delivery methods, and gender. Analyses of major trends for each sub-segment are featured, alongside projections from 2023 to 2028 for both the country and regions.
